A teenager who juggled his A-Levels with setting up fun activities for young people has received an award.

Elsadiq Ahmed-Salim, of Review Road, Cricklewood, was handed the London Young Person of the Year Oscar at an event attended by Nick Clegg's wife, Miriam Gonzalez, and Cabinet minister Justine Greening.

Elsadiq received his award for the activities he has launched in Barnet, including a mini football league at Hendon School and for helping to organise the annual Hendonbury Music Festival.

The 16-year-old is also an ambassador for the CitySafe campaign, and has taken part in the National Citizen Service.

Elsadiq, who is inspired by his family in Sudan, said: “I love visiting my grandparents' village in rural Sudan. I love seeing people wake up early to go to study, go to the farm to work, then come home and relax without complaining. I don’t think anything motivates me more than this.

"They are living in extreme heat, with inconsistent electricity and running water supplies, but they don't feel angry or as if they were cheated out of a good life. They’re making the most out of the situation they’re in and that teaches me that every dark cloud has a silver lining.

"Whether you live in rural Sudan or central London, every problem has a solution.”

As well as the award, Elsadiq also received £100 for a good cause of his choice and £50 to treat himself.

YOPEY founder Tony Gearing said: "All the finalists are winners because they are all helping to give the younger generation the fairer image they deserve."
