The new Mayor of Hertsmere led a flag-raising ceremony to commemorate this weekend’s Armed Forces Day.

Mayor Councillor Carey Keates was joined by council staff, councillors, members of the Royal British Legion and the mayor's chaplain Rabbi Zorach Meir Salasnik of the Bushey United Synagogue at the ceremony, held at the civic offices, in Elstree Way, Borehamwood, yesterday morning.

A bugler, Adrian Temple, played the last post, which was followed by a minute's silence.

Similar flag-raising ceremonies are taking place across the country this week in a nationwide show of support for Britain's armed forces.

Cllr Keates said: "Now, more than ever, it is appropriate to recognise and remember the contribution of our armed forces, securing our safety and those of our children. It was a tremendous privilege to lead Hertsmere's flag-raising ceremony as one of my first official duties as the borough's mayor."
