Shaftesbury Barnet Harriers underlined their tag as one of the country’s strongest athletics clubs with victory at the English National Cross Country Championships.

The two stand-out performances came from Richard Goodman (Under-23), pictured, and Jamie Harper (Under-13).

Goodman, who had won gold medals in the European and Southern Championships, clinched silver at the weekend event after finishing eight seconds behind the leader.

Harper also claimed a silver medal but it was the first time he had failed to secure victory this winter in his respective races.

The men’s Under-17 side of Jamal Lewis, Jamie Dee, Robbie Lightowler and Greg Cooke became national champions, winning their race by 70 points. It means the side are now the English cross country and road race champions.

The Under-20 men’s team of Michael Callegari, Liam Dee, Ben Rochford and Mark Pearce sealed bronze medals.

The overall standings saw Harriers finish on 1008 points which was well ahead of Aldershot Farnham and District in second.
