Leonard Willcocks

Leonard Willcocks Passed away peacefully on 1st April 2018 aged 90 years. Born in Stoke Row, Oxfordshire in 1927, Len returned briefly during the 'phony war' of 1939/40 as an evacuee but grew up in Muswell Hill and attended Bounds Green Secondary School. He met Mary Josephine Egan at the Astoria and they were married at Our Lady of Muswell RC Church in 1959 and went on to have three sons, Alan, Terry and Paul and granddaughter Ruby. Len's paternal family hailed from Poltimore in Devon, his great-grandfather Thomas moving to London in the 1850s to work on the railways. When Thomas' son Charles trained as an engineer he set a pattern for later generations: Len's father was engaged in vital war work as a scientific instrument maker in the Second World War and Len himself worked as an engineer before migrating to Australia as a 'Ten Pound Pom'. Len moved back to the UK in the late fifties and became an International Telephonist for BT. In 1977 he converted to Catholicism. After retirement, Len contributed regularly to 'The Archer', the local newspaper for East Finchley and, in 2009, Len and Josie celebrated their fiftieth anniversary. Len will be sadly missed by the East Finchley community as well as family and friends world-wide.
