Wild About Wild Garlic

Wild garlic Wild garlic

With the recent sunny spell now over, I was extremely excited to this week see my herb garden flourishing especially a batch of wild garlic plants.

Wild garlic is often found growing naturally in woodlands around bluebells -Hampstead Heath has an abundance of them in the less well visited areas! Similar to Lily of the Valley in looks, wild garlic can be easily distinguished by its garlic like smell and long lush leaves beneath which grow the bulbs of garlic, that slightly are smaller and milder in taste than cultivated garlic.

Although there is some evidence that wild garlic can be beneficial for those suffering from high blood pressure, for me, I just love the magical aroma and flavour that the leaves give to my recipes They are delicious in soups, salads, risottos and stews and can be eaten in its raw or cooked state. So grow it yourself, as I did from a cutting taken from under a small fence by the Heath extension or go on an expedition with the family and try and spot some yourself !
