Dennis Signy OBE was a former wartime cub reporter on the Hendon and Finchley Times at £4-a-week and became group editor for 17 years in the late Sixties. He was a national press football writer for five decades, is author of several football books and director of Barnet FC. |

My Signy Says column in the Barnet FC programme brought the disparaging remark from one supporter that I was a name dropper. Well, with names to drop like Sir Stanley Matthews, Sir Tom Finney, Sir Bobby Charlton,Sir Bobby Robson, Sir Geoff Hurst, Bobby Moore, George Best,and other superstar friends I have accumulated through football, who wouldn't be?

The oldest man in Britain celebrated his birthday the other day. He's 112. What a target for optimists like me whose dream is of receiving a message from my contemporary, the Queen, when we both hit the century mark.

When we got married in 1966 I bought season tickets for my wife and I to "honeymoon" at Wembley Stadium watching England win the World Cup. I reckoned that I had bought a lifetime of marital good will.
