In February Barnet Council's Planning Committee turned down an application for the redevelopment of the Furnitureland site on the North Finchley High Road. In that decision they overturned a recommendation by their officers. The developers (Jardine) appealed, and there was a Public Inquiry in September. The Finchley Society appeared at the Inquiry in support of the Council's decision, and argued, among other things, that the application was contrary to the Council's own Development Plan because it did not provide enough amenity space for the flats proposed. The Inspector has just issued his decision, which was to dismiss the appeal on amenity space grounds. It remains to be seen what the applicants will now do, but whatever happens should be an improvement, and the Finchley Society is proud of its part in achieving that.
