The search for the perfect pram

By Caron Kemp »

We decided this weekend to pretend the nursery issues didn’t exist and go looking again at fun things like the pram. Except that even this decision is proving to be the stuff of nightmares.

We thought we knew what we wanted. Granted we had only been to one shop and looked at one pram but it seemed to do the trick, was not too expensive and didn’t weigh more than me. It also came with a good deal on a car seat and we, like fools, thought we’d found a little gem. Two problems solved in one and more ticks off the long list of what we needed to buy.

But then we were advised against that car seat and more annoyingly, we were advised to shop around. Shop around? look for bargains? Make sure we’ve actually got the right pram for our little bundle? Why why why when we have so much to consider?

But they were right. And so we spent the weekend scouting out the opposition. Problem is there is so much. There’s the three wheelers, the lightweight buggies, the travel systems that you can attach a car seat too, the fold-aways, the umbrella style fold-aways, the old fashioned ones... the list goes on.

I know what my main criteria are. I want something comfortable for the baby, lightweight enough that I can easily haul it in and out of the cars boot, forward facing seat that converts to outward facing for when it grows and mid price range — not so expensive that I am bankrupt but of a high enough quality that it doesn’t fall apart with said child inside. But that hasn’t really helped. They all look the same to me and I can’t wholly decipher the good from the bad.

Any advice please?
