The name game (part 2)

With nine weeks to go things are really progressing on the planning front. The nursery is slowly coming together and just looks adorable and I have even ordered some Pampers and baby vests. I am getting really excited.

And quite importantly, we have chosen the names for a boy or a girl now. For ages we have known what we’d call it if it’s a boy but for whatever reason girls names just seemed to be impossible to agree upon. But the last few days have proved very useful as a light seemed to come on when we found the perfect name.

Which is good because yesterday we were out and about and stopped to get a coffee. We were sitting on a sofa in the coffee house drinking away when we saw the women opposite were ploughing through a pile of baby name books. I worked out through a process of elimination that they were mother and daughter but what I couldn’t work out was why they were doing what they were doing. The younger woman didn’t look pregnant and the older woman didn’t look like this could be about her. And to confuse matters more there was a gorgeous kid lying in a pram next to them. Who were they picking the name for?

Anyway I am nosy and with my bump being the best conversation starter out there I got talking to them. It transpired that said baby was four weeks old and that the younger woman — the mother — had still failed to find a name for her bundle. Apparently they had a date fixed to have the birth registered but they couldn’t bring themselves to commit to a name so they walked out. Legally there are two weeks left until they must put a name on paper.

I found this all astonishing. For four weeks that gorgeous little child has been nameless. Referred to as “booboo” while they conjour up a more permanent alternative. Believe me I get that choosing a baby name is daunting but come on, there are nine months to work it out and what’s more they knew what sex the baby would be so they didn’t even have to have multiple options.

It made me happy that we have finally settled on a name. Let’s hope we don’t change our minds and end up with our own nameless child for a while.
