Times Series journalist Caron Kemp blogs about first-time motherhood. |

The bets began yesterday amongst my husband’s family as to the gender, weight and birth date of the baby. It’s quite fun all this guessing and seeing what people think.
I did forewarn people that I wouldn’t like them very much anymore if they predicted a birth weight of anything over 7.5lb or a due date of anything after mid November. Not that this has any bearing on reality but I can’t bring myself to think about these eventualities just yet.
There was an exact split between those that thought it would be a boy and those that think it’s a girl. Weights ranged from 5.15lb to just under 8lb and production dates went as far as November 20th. But according to my husband’s uncle it’s going to happen today. Given that I am at work, not exactly prepared and not due for six weeks I really hope he’s wrong. And I don’t think my fellow reporters fancy adding “midwife” to the qualifications section on their CVs.
But it is true what people say, that these last few weeks really can drag and not knowing these details and just guessing your way through each day can get you through it.
I don’t want to commit to anything myself yet though. I keep flittering between it being a boy and a girl and as long as the weight is healthy but reasonable I am happy. As for the date — well I am still convinced it’ll be late but not too late, please...
I am going to start drinking my raspberry leaf tea soon...
