New figures show that almost half of all councils have axed weekly rubbish collections. The Government has revealed that 155 English councils, representing 18 million people, have scrapped weekly bin collections - and in Northern Ireland, a staggering 90% of councils have scrapped them.

Who said that the public sector couldn’t deliver on major infrastructure projects? Well last weekend I and colleagues braved the freezing temperatures to witness a feat of engineering – the installation of the last bridge at Aerodrome Road in Colindale. Those residents that know aerodrome road will know that the road was narrow and no longer had the capacity to serve the local area – not least as it is rapidly becoming one of the fastest developing areas. The new striking Beaufort Park, the to be rebuilt Graham Park Estate and the future developments on the Newspaper Archive site and possible the Hendon Police College site all meant the old bridges needed to be replaced so the access road could be widened – we also were able to provide new, stronger bridges.

Silence is golden; or is it? Usually a lack of ‘chatter’ can indicate contentment. In a world where we are encouraged to complain, not necessarily a bad thing if service is driven up, silence can leave a vacuum to be filled.

Well yet another surprise in the postbag this week - not! Apparently the Government has increased funding to local councils as if money is going out of fashion. Well it seems to have passed Barnet by again! We have been told that we are on the 'floor' i.e. We will receive the absolute minimum increase in grant from central government - just 2% - again.

The recent ‘consultation’ undertaken by the health service into the reconfiguration of health services in Barnet has – surprise surprise – resulted in Option 1 being chosen. This was the favoured option at the start and one the Council firmly opposed. Despite a convincing argument that the ‘Barnet Option’ should be formally assessed and put to the resident’s – the health commissars ignored the Council (and the MPs and the Assembly Member).
