Shopping heaven, retail hell

Posted on 6:23pm Tuesday 9th December 2008

While the rest of you enjoy the delights of Christmas in Barnet, I’ll be basking in winter sun on the other side of the pond. By which I mean, a tropical Caribbean paradise. But despite the obvious perks, there really is one thing I’m particularly looking forward to — by-passing the retail madness that walks hand-in-hand with the festive season.

On the home front

Posted on 8:30am Friday 5th December 2008

Last week I received a call from an organisation called Landlord Action. They were keen for me to write an article on a dodgy North Finchley estate agency that allegedly goes under a series of aliases in order to con anyone and everyone it can get its grubby over-fingerprinted mitts on.

Sail away

Posted on 5:19pm Thursday 27th November 2008

Amid the furore over the billions the Government will borrow to fund its tax give-away this week, Lib Dem treasury spokesman Vince Cable repeated his oft-voiced call to end the tax breaks for the super rich. Why this does not get a more sympathetic hearing, or form a much stronger part of the debate over ways to provide a cash-boost to the economy, is almost beyond me.

Getting the spliff to your ashtray

Posted on 6:34pm Thursday 20th November 2008

The vice-president of Columbia has attempted to instill a sense of social conscience in the middle-class, casual users of cocaine, a drug which has torn parts of his country to shreds.

Love, politics and the press

Posted on 9:30am Tuesday 28th October 2008

There are few more difficult jobs as a journalist than speaking to a parent who has lost a child. Their pain is etched into every word they say, their voices taut with anxiety and profound sadness.

A car-free life

Posted on 7:05pm Friday 24th October 2008

Student life is often seen as a slob fest for “tax dodgers” who are shamelessly delaying their entrance into the working world.

We're all such good friends!

Posted on 4:22pm Friday 24th October 2008

There’s something about the Mandelson-Osborne-Rothschild story that truly captures the imagination. It’s just all so utterly, inescapably filthy. Everyone is trying their best to remain aloof and come out of it whiter than their crisply-starched holiday polo shirts. But they all come out of it coated with the lustre of filthy lucre.

No restrictions on play

Posted on 5:30pm Friday 17th October 2008

In an age where a generation of children are growing up with a multitude of virtual computer worlds at their finger tips, it is disappointing when free outdoor activities become restricted.

Stop the trend

Posted on 8:00am Thursday 16th October 2008

Yesterday morning I looked on as dozens of armoured police officers, backed up with dog handlers, raided an East Finchley flat. They thought they might find four or five dogs, each easily capable of killing a child - in someone’s home.

Man versus The Man

Posted on 10:50am Thursday 9th October 2008

Last week I wrote a story about a man with real cheek. A rogue. A rascal. A jammy son-of-a-gun. The sort of person housewives hit with their brooms for muddying their lino while sneakily hoisting their hemline and stealing sideways glances in the cooker door to check they don't have lipstick on their teeth.
