Beating babies: just say no

A couple of years ago, when I was working as a freelance production assistant / undervalued skivvy for a BBC World documentary producer, I did much of my work from home. At the time, I was living at my parents' house - a peaceful leafy retreat beyond the Greater London borders, where the only real distraction was Vaughn Williams' Lark Ascending drifting through the cracks in the floorboards from the kitchen stereo below.

I remember a story, possibly apocryphal, about a leader of the opposition in the distant past who had a close friendship with the Prime Minister of the day and, in the Commons, would give him a cheeky wink by way of warning before asking what he considered to be a tricky question.
