Everyone I asked to guess the price of the Infiniti Q60 got it wrong. Badly wrong.

And while about £40,000 is a lot of money for a two-door, four-seater sports coupé – my informal panel got nowhere close, offering estimates ranging from £50,000 to more than £60,000.

So whatever else the aggressively-styled Q60 does, it clearly looks the business. The good news is that it does it too.

Sitting on 19-inch alloy wheels with tight gaps between the tyres and wheel arches and a deep, double-arch grille set back from the body, it has a low, powerful stance and a lower centre of gravity. That has a tangible effect on the dynamics of the sleek four-cylinder, 2.0-litre turbocharged, 208 horsepower car.

Driving through a seven-speed automatic transmission, the rear-wheel-drive Q60 feels reassuringly secure at motorway speeds, while remaining remarkably nimble for such a large car.

All models are fitted with ‘active noise cancellation’, effectively preventing irritating engine noise frequencies from disturbing the calm of the cabin and allowing you to better enjoy the performance of the 13-speaker Bose sound system.

Optional electronically-controlled suspension monitors the vehicle’s body roll, pitch and bounce rate to deliver confident handling, while ‘steer-by-wire’ steering gives you the choice of seven personalised modes to customise steering performance according to your preferred driving style.

Inside, the uncluttered centre console is dominated by twin touchscreens – an eight inch version above and a slightly smaller one below – giving control of everything from the hi-fi and climate control to telephone and any downloaded apps.

One of those apps allows you to connect a smartphone to the car and locate where the car is parked and track if it is stolen. It will also give a monthly overview of the state of the car’s airbags, brakes, engine, oil pressure, and tyre pressure and alert if you if any action or servicing is needed.

The top screen allows you to select the driving mode ranging from standard to sport. There is also a personal setting that lets you choose both the mode and the level of response.

A range of safety systems help to keep you safe from intelligent cruise control, lane departure prevention and blind spot intervention to moving object detection and pedestrian braking system. Adaptive front lighting and traffic sign recognition systems are also fitted.

The cabin gives plenty of room for passengers and there is a reasonable boot. With only two people on board the rear seat folds to open up a large carrying space.

The Premium Tech model tested here was finished in black leather with black wood accents and Sport models are standard in black leather with violet carbon fibre accent, with the option of red or white leather with a glass fibre accent.

And for those yearning for yet more power to accompany the coupe’s upmarket, expensive looks, there is also a 3.0-litre, 400 horsepower, V6 petrol engine available – at a price.
