Throughout 2014, the RAF Museum in Hendon will be hosting various events to commemorate the outbreak of World War One in 1914.

These begin in April, when author Hilary Robinson and Martin Impey, the illustrator of War Horse, showcase their new book, Where the Poppies Now Grow.

In this workshop, children, aged six and over, will hear short stories and engage with a period of history where so many sacrificed their lives.

Places are free but booking is essential. The storytelling sessions will take place on April 7 and 8 at 12pm and 2pm.

June will see the launch of Biggles and Chums, a First World War art exhibition of the drawings and watercolours on paper of Captain WE Johns, the creator of Biggles, and his contemporaries. The images have never been exhibited before and all were produced during or immediately after the Great War.

Aeroplanes, historic actions, the new operational procedures of air warfare (World War One was the first conflict which saw fighting extend into the air space above the battlefield), and portraits of the young men who flew will also be on display alongside medals, clothing, badges, Zeppelin fragments and other exhibits.

The exhibition will run from June 2 until January 5, 2015.

The season continues across the summer, with the First World War Film Series, four evenings of film related to the conflict in a pop-up cinema event. The details of which films will be screened have yet to be confirmed.

And the museum’s ever-popular ‘make and take’ school holiday sessions in October will this year be dedicated to WW1, when visitors will be given the opportunity to make their very own World War One Airfix model. The workshops are suitable for children aged five and up. These will be held in the Dermot Boyle Wing of the museum from October 25 to 31, from 11am to 1pm and from 2pm to 4pm.
