Last month, the Watford Observer and the Watford Colosseum teamed up to invite you to nominate your friend, sister, mum, auntie or granny to win a date with The Dreamboys, to celebrate their forthcoming show at the venue at the end of April – and you responded in your droves.

Unfortunately for the rest of us Watford ladies, the lucky winner was Sara Wasam, 51, from North Watford, who met up with Rowan, Jack and Peter on Thursday, April 3.

“It was a total shock,“ laughs Sara, who works as a community learning disability nurse for Herts County Council, based in Apsley. “I didn’t know what was coming, so it was a real shock.“

Sara was nominated by her friend’s daughter, Rachel Cowell, to cheer Sara up after a long illness.

“I’d been ill in a hospital for a long time with spinal problems,“ says Sara, “and I had a lot on my plate, so it was very touching, what Rachel did. Touching, but a shock!

“She phoned me the day before to say she’d entered me in this competition and I’d been shortlisted, but I thought it was just tickets for a show. She only told me a few minutes before! But it certainly did make me feel better.“

The boys were all still fully clothed at the outset, but as soon as the photographers appeared “the tops came off! That was rather nice,“ Sara laughs.

The boys presented Sara with a glass of champagne and two tickets to their show at the Colosseum – one of which will definitely be going to Rachel, as a way of saying thank you.

“But they did tell me, when they handed over the tickets, that I wouldn’t be sitting down for long, so that worries me a little bit – they said they know where I’m sitting, so I think they’re going to try and get me up on stage!“

Despite her initial nerves, Sara was soon won over by the boys’ charm (she admitted the bodies helped, as well).

“We were talking about all sorts of things,“ she says, “about my back problems, about their careers, how they got into it and what they have to do for the show, which was all quite interesting.

“They’re so easy-going and very easy to get on with. I’m really looking forward to the show now – though maybe a little bit apprehensive!“
