Actor Michael McKean, who portrayed the lead singer in the film This Is Spinal Tap, has been injured in a road accident in New York City.

Harriet Sternberg, a McKean spokeswoman, said he suffered a broken leg in the accident, which happened at a junction in Manhattan's Upper West Side just before 3pm local time on Tuesday.

McKean, 64, was taken to St Luke's Hospital, where he was said by police to be in a stable condition.

McKean played David St Hubbins in This Is Spinal Tap, the celebrated 1984 film about a spoof heavy metal band. He also played Lenny in the hit television comedy show Laverne & Shirley.

He is currently starring in the Broadway production of Gore Vidal's political drama Best Man.
