Personal Overview - Has risen fast through the ranks of Labour MPs since first entering Parliament, she has Local Government experience, and has progressed quickly in Government. She has a wide range of political interests, although she seems most strongly motivated by education & health issues (with experience of working in that area). Gained from the 2001 new Labour Government reshuffle, being promoted to lead the Department of Culture, Media & Sport. To date the only major issues have been related to her husband's business connections with Formula One during the Bernie Ecclestone controversy (over the sports exemption from a tobacco sponsorship ban following a £1m Labour party donation) and in connection with alleged corruption in Italy. Was moved to focus on the 2012 Olympics in Gordon Brown's initial Cabinet reshuffle. Gained additional responsibility at the June 2009 reshuffle as Minister for the Cabinet Office before losing office in 2010. She returned to the Shadow Olympics portfolio in October 2010 and gained extra responsibility shadowing the Cabinet Office in January 2011. Following the 2012 Olympics she stood down from her post after having served for nearly 20 years in both the Cabinet and Shadow Cabinet.

Characteristics - Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire DBE (2012). Seen as a safe political pair of New Labour hands capable of strong media performance. Her husband (an international corporate lawyer) was implicated over alleged corruption in Italy.
