The M1 has now reopened southbound between junction five at Watford and four at Edgware following an accident earlier today.

Emergency services were called to the motorway at 5.40am where a white Mercedes van had been in collision with another vehicle.

The driver of the other vehicle failed to stop at the scene.

The driver of the Mercedes van was taken to Watford General Hospital where his condition was said to be life threatening.

He has since been tranferred to Enfield's Chase Farm Hospital where his condition remains critical.

Anyone with information on the vehicle that failed to stop is urged to call Hertfordshire police on 0845 330 022.
