The new Mayor of Barnet opened the refurbished Chipping Barnet Library on Saturday.

Councillor John Marshall also kicked off a two-week programme of mind and body events at the library, in Stapylton Road, including reflexology classes, Indian head massages and rugby skills coaching for youngsters.

The library refurbishment is part of a £1 million programme to modernise six libraries in the borough.

Chipping Barnet is the second to be completed, after Edgware Library was reopened earlier this month.

Councillor Matthew Offord, who has replaced Mr Marshall as the cabinet member for investment in learning, said: "Our library strategy has set out a clear plan to create libraries for the future across Barnet.

"Our libraries are so much more than simply a place to borrow books. They are now a community resource providing a relaxed environment to work, study or relax."
