Members of Mill Hill Synagogue have thrown themselves into Mitzvah Day with five good-will projects planned for next month.

Organisers are looking to include all ages of the congregation in the good deeds day, which encourages people of all faiths to help out community groups and charities on or around November 16-18.

Teenagers will be painting a room at the Brockenhurst Gardens synagogue, while younger members will be collecting toys for five charities.

Children at the synagogue Sunday school plan to make gift boxes for children at three different charities, while older members will be collecting items for Homeless Action Barnet and painting an area in the Mill Hill Broadway Green.

A tea party will then be laid on at the synagogue for all those involved.

The synagogue’s involvement in the charitable day has expanded rapidly over since it started four years ago helping out in an elderly care home.

Co-ordinator Judith Mizrahi said: “It is unbelievable. Our community is so diverse and willing, we’re doing an amazing amount.”

A speaker from the homeless charity will be visiting the synagogue post-Mitzvah Day to give a report on the work carried out on the day.

Judith added: “It used to just be about doing the activity but now we’re really trying to learn more about the impact it is having.

“We’ve opened it up to people of all faiths and denominations and it is a great, natural thing to do. It has been challenging but we’re now involved in projects right across the community and that is great.”

Staff at the Times Series are also looking to get involved in Mitzvah Day and we want you, the reader, to choose a project for us.

Email your suggestions to chewett@london.newsquest.co.uk and they will be put forward to an independent judging panel.
