Students at a Hendon school are collecting old mobile phones to support a South African charity.

Pupils at St Mary’s High School, in Downage, have so far gathered 23 phones to donate to the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund.

The school has been supporting the charity since the start of term in September, and hopes its efforts will help with the building of a new hospital in South Africa.

On Thursday, Rachael Ward of the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund visited the school to collect the phones.

These will now be recycled and for every phone the Fund will receive a donation.

The Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund is a not for profit organisation which aims to change the way in which society views children and young people in order to improve their lives.
