Barnet Borough Council is considering £295,000 plans to implement pedestrian safety changes in Colindale.

The council’s Hendon Area Environment Sub-Committee is considering plans to improve Aerodrome Road.

The changes would be funded with money that developer St George is obliged to pay as a condition of the planning permission it was granted to develop Beaufort Park.

The plans under consideration include spending £30,000 improving pedestrian accessibility in the road, and spending £70,000 creating three pedestrian islands and a new zebra crossing.

The islands would all be in Aerodrome Road and the zebra crossing would be positioned by Heritage Avenue.

Accessibility would be improved through measures such as installing tactile paving for the benefit of the blind and partially sighted.

Dropped curbs could also be installed to make the road move accessible for those in wheelchairs and using mobility scooters.

The council is also considering investing £40,000 in a new bus stop on Aerodrome Road, opposite the junction with Chancellor Place.

The final proposal is that £155,000 is spent realigning the south western corner of the A41 into Aerodrome Road and installing a pedestrian island at this point.

There are currently no formal pedestrian crossings on Aerodrome Road and they have become even more important since the regeneration of Colindale began.

The plans will see 10,000 homes built in the area which will increase the amount of traffic on Aerodrome Road, making crossing more dangerous for pedestrians.

Following their survey of the area, council officers told the committee: “While there has only been one pedestrian accident at the location in the last three years, the surveys have shown that there is a tangible demand for pedestrians in the area which is set to increase as a result of the development of Beaufort Park.

“Given the current pedestrian provision, and the excessive vehicle speeds observed, the area would benefit from the implementation of the measures detailed.”
