Nobody likes waiting at the lights but this driver was left sitting around when he flattened a traffic signal in Edgware this afternoon.

The silver Audi mounted the curb in High Street, outside the Lidl supermarket, and took out a metal pole at the pelican crossing at 2pm.

Stunned onlookers began taking pictures of the unlikely sight as the driver and a male passenger got out of the vehicle unhurt.

Police said the pair are still at the scene and officers are dealing with the incident.

High Street remains open, though motorists have been told to expect delays in the area.

A nearby worker, who sent in these pictures, was walking along the road when she came across the scene.

The 26-year-old, who did not want to be named, said: “I wondered how on earth anyone had managed to do it. No-one was around, there was no driver in the car and the emergency services hadn’t even arrived yet. People were standing around just watching. It was very strange.”
