Retail jobs under threat as Comet prepares for administration

Retail jobs in Barnet are under threat as electrical chain Comet prepares to go into administration.

Comet Group Limited, which has stores in Hendon, Mill Hill and Friern Barnet, has confirmed the plans are expected to take place as early as next week.

A statement from the company says: “Comet Group Limited can confirm that it has today taken steps to seek the protection of the Court with a view to the Company entering into Administration during week commencing November 5, 2012.

“In the meantime the board is urgently working with its advisers to seek a solution to secure a viable future for the company.”

Restructuring specialist Deloitte has been lined up to act as administrator for the 240-store business.

Where are all Barnets traders protesting about this ? it has to be Barnets parking scheme that is to blame for this?

The Mill Hill branch is in Pentavia Retail Park where there's a large free car park so the Barnet Parking scheme is not responsible.
Disinterested and surly staff, prices higher than Argos (next door) for things like printer ink or paper - though they will match the price if you show them the Argos Catalogue - and their irritating attempts to sell over priced warranty extensions which imply the product is likely to fall apart in no time may have an influence.

@devonshire
LOL !!! Reel them in!
I know that there is a free car park there.

The point I was making is that in Barnet the traders bleat on and on about the parking charges killing their trade however they have not once actually thought that lack of trade might actually be down to other factors such as the ones that you point out in your post,not to mention that there is a global recession!!
Comet could not keep going even though the majority of their stores have free parking
Does that not indicate that the Barnet traders need to look further than the end of their noses!

Sorry James, but there isn't usually much sarcasm in these posts so I took you at face value.You are quite correct of course.

Err, Comet's demise was entirely expected, primarily because it simply could not compete with the Dixons Group (Curries/PCWorld). Dixons last figures show an increase of 7%, with Comet gone they will be expecting a booming Christmas.

You may have noticed that, with a very few exceptions, Dixons do not have high street shops. Why would they when it is difficult and frustrating to park!
