Children dressed as zebras, giraffes and sparkly sunshines as they danced and sang at their very own carnival yesterday.

More than 70 parents and children took part in the event at Childs Hill Children’s Centre in Dersingham Road to celebrate black history month.

Entertainer Bashiyra, who performed at the Paralympics, sang a variety of Caribbean themed tunes and St Michael’s Steel Band had the children up on their feet.

Young people also had the chance to make their very own carnival masks and have their faces painted.

Patricia Wharton, centre manager, said: “The day was about experiencing different cultures and developing the children’s knowledge of the world.

“The children loved it – they were singing and dancing and they loved dressing up.”

The event was also attended by the Mayor of Barnet, Councillor Brian Schama, who had a go at playing the steel drums.
