Cheers erupted as storybook monster The Gruffalo helped the Mayor of Barnet turn on the Christmas lights at Brent Cross shopping centre this evening.

The Gruffalo had children in stitches of laughter as he sang a song from his theatre show, before encouraging everyone to count down from ten.

The mayor, Councillor Brian Schama, pressed a big red button lighting up Father Christmas’ grotto and a tree made out of golden stars and twinkling snowflakes.

Nine-year-old Keisha Murdock from Edgware watched the display with her sister Keiana Murdock, six.

Keisha, who was looking forward to visiting Father Christmas in his grotto, said: “The Gruffalo was really funny, and the lights are cool.”

Singing group Voxcetera entertained shoppers with festive tunes including Winter Wonderland and Silent Night.

Seven-year-old Ben Adams from Hendon said: “I really liked the singing because it made me feel excited about Christmas.”

Volunteers, including Councillor John Marshall, were also busy collecting cash for the Mayor’s charities including Barnet Carers and Barnet Hospital.
