Building work has started on the site of a new primary school in Colindale.

Contractors were joined by Barnet Council's cabinet member for education, Councillor Andrew Harper, headteacher Chris Flathers and teaching staff for a ceremony to mark the start of works for The Orion School Project on Wednesday.

Planning consent was given in September for the school to relocate from Lanacre Avenue, Colindale to its new site at the former Mill Hill Sports Club in Grahame Park Way.

The new school will be purpose-built with four reception classes, two more than it currently has.

It will provide an autistic spectrum condition unit for 21 children and a nursery for 52 toddlers.

Its facilities will also be open for community use including a floodlit artificial turf pitch, dance studio, sports hall and theatre space.

Construction should be finished by Spring 2014.
