Non-violent preachers from Jain Network facing fight with neighbours over temple plans in Colindale

Plans for a three-storey temple in Colindale have been recommended for approval despite objections from neighbours.

The Jain Network, the UK headquarters for the Jainism faith, wants to demolish its offices in Colindale Avenue to make way for a new community building, including flats for staff and a temple.

Jainism is an Indian religion that preaches non-violence as one of its core beliefs.

A total of 70 neighbours signed a petition opposing the plans, while 11 also wrote to the council complaining that the development would cause traffic problems and would be an eyesore.

Officers who recommended the scheme for approval said the application meets council planning requirements and, with pre-agreed highways improvements, would not affect traffic.

The Jainism movement has a strong following in north London and is looking to expand its presence in the capital.

Planning officers at Barnet Borough Council have put together proposals that would see the Jain Network pay out more than £17,000 in Section 106 payments to offset the impact of the development.

Members of the council’s West Area Planning Sub-Committee will assess the application at a meeting at Hendon Town Hall next Wednesday.
