A father-of-three has persuaded council officers to assess a “dangerously narrow” footpath where he claims someone could be killed any day.

Erik Alexander of Finchley says the footpath in Manor View is a hazard to everyone who uses it including parents and schoolchildren.

Mr Alexander said: “One often sees people stepping into the road because the pavement is too narrow. Vehicles are right up against it – it’s really dangerous.

“There are frequent near-misses and in 2012 my three-year-old was struck by the wing mirror of a passing vehicle. She was not hurt but it was very shocking.

“If you include near misses I’d say there are incidents happening there on a weekly basis. Users of the pavement are frightened and scared. It’s only a matter of time before a child is killed there.”

Mr Alexander's concerns were mirrored by other pedestrians at last night’s Finchley and Golders Green residents’ forum who also raised issues with the amount of traffic travelling through the area.

Ward councillor Graham Old added: “It’s a very dangerous spot. There’s a lot of scope for an accident here.”

The matter was referred to the Barnet Borough Council’s Finchley and Golders Green area environment sub-committee which agreed to assess the issue. Results of the assessment as well as possible solutions will be reported back to the sub-committee in June.
