Detectives have revealed an elderly man could have murdered his wife before a fire at their home in North Finchley.

Argyrios Siokos, 69, and his wife Chloe Siokos, 80, were found dead after firefighters were called to tackle a blaze at their semi-detached home in Fallow Court Avenue.

Six fire engines and more than 30 firefighters took two hours to bring the fire under control after being called at 6am, but the elderly Greek couple were found dead at the scene.

Neighbours said the pair were planning to go to a doctor's appointment later that morning.

Officers from the Homicide and Serious Crime Command are treating the incident as murder.

In a statement, the Metropolitan Police said: “Enquiries have revealed that Mrs Siokos has injuries inconsistent with fire being the cause of death.”

Nobody else is sought in connection with the incident.

Shaheda Hanif, who has lived next door to the couple for six years, said: “I’m just so upset – it’s sickening to think something like this might have happened.

“I couldn’t sleep for thinking about her. I can’t believe something so bad could happen to such a lovely, good and kind person.”

Eric Maltby, who lives in Fallow Close Avenue, said: “It’s really frightening if it turns out to be true. It’s normally a very quiet street – it’s shocking really.”

Enquiries are continuing and post mortems are being arranged.
