Barnet Borough Council has revealed its plans to create 1,500 extra primary school places in the borough.

The council wants to expand four existing schools as well as develop a brand new three-form entry school in Mill Hill to ease the burden on Barnet’s oversubscribed classrooms.

If planning applications are passed, the authority will build the brand new Mill Hill East Primary School in time to open in September 2014.

The £11.5 million school would be part-funded by the developers of the Millbrook Park Development at the former Inglis Barracks, and would have sports facilities including a full-size all-weather football pitch for community use.

Applications also include proposals for permanent expansions at Martin Primary, Moss Hall, Brunswick Park, and Oakleigh School.

Menorah Foundation School was granted planning permission to expand on Tuesday and work is already underway in building the new £15million Orion Primary school in Colindale.

Councillor Andrew Harper, cabinet member for education, said: “We are incredibly proud of our high-performing schools and our policy of expanding the most successful schools is proving popular among parents seeking places for their children.

“We are committed to making sure every child has access to high quality education, but to do this during a time of unprecedented demand requires substantial investment in our school buildings.

“I’m particularly pleased we have been able to put forward an expansion for Oakleigh school, one of our outstanding schools for children with special educational needs, on what is a very constrained site.

"This has taken an enormous amount of team work from the school community and our staff, but I am pleased to see the finished plans.”

While the plans are being submitted, the council says it will work with schools to create attiditional temporary places this autumn.
