A woman had to be rescued when her car careered off the road and crashed into a large pond this morning.

Police, fire and ambulance crews were called to Totteridge Lane where the blue Nissan Micra was floating in shallow water shortly after 8am.

Officers had to swim out to the car and rescue the driver, a 32-year-old woman.

She was treated for back pain by paramedics at the scene before being taken to Barnet Hospital.

Traffic was brought to a standstill along the busy country lane as police closed the road in both directions.

The road has since reopened.
