A synagogue looked more like a big top when worshippers celebrated the Jewish holiday of Purim on Sunday.

The synagogue in Eversleigh Road welcomed 140 guests who dressed head-to-toe in colourful costumes.

Police Inspector Adrian Needley judged the best dressed before crowning nine-year-old Charlotte Kurash the night's winner for her multi-coloured clown outfit.

Donna Cohen, who organised the entertainment said "Thanks to the hard work of an enthusiastic and dedicated team of volunteers co-ordinating food, decor and entertainment, the event was a huge success.

"An amazing time was had by all and we raised over £700 for the charity Camp Simcha which brings happiness to children with life-threatening illnesses."

Purim commemorates a story in the Torah's Book of Esther when Jews living in ancient Persia were saved from extermination in the wake of a plot by a Persian noble called Haman.
