A man is due to appear in court today charged with the theft of a pensioner’s beloved pet dog.

Ted, a Cavalier King Charles spaniel, was snatched from outside Tesco Express, in Friern Barnet Lane, New Southgate, on December 8.

His owner, partially sighted Philomena Hynes, 75, was left distraught and police broadcast an appeal for information on Twitter.

The message was retweeted a total of 52,820 times before the dog was recovered.

Allen Adrian Denny, of Station Road, New Barnet, was yesterday arrested in connection with the theft and was charged later that afternoon.

The 23-year-old is due to appear at Highbury Corner Magistrates Court later today.
