CCTV footage shows the moment a Barnet councillor and former mayor physically assaulted a mother-of-two in the middle of a packed high street.

Totteridge representative Brian Coleman pleaded guilty on Friday to the common assault of café owner Helen Michael in North Finchley High Road on September 20.

The former parking portfolio holder attacked the 50-year-old while she took pictures of his illegally parked car on her mobile phone.

Former GLA chairman Coleman, once the UK’s highest paid politician, can be seen waiting at a cash point in the top right of the shot.

At 57 seconds, Miss Michael is seen next to the tree in the top right of the screen taking pictures of Coleman’s car, which had been parked in a loading bay.

As he returns to his vehicle, Mr Coleman sees Miss Michael and lunges at her before grabbing her by the wrists.

In the ensuing tussle, Miss Michael suffered bruising to her left breast, scratches to her left hand and tenderness in her shoulder.

The attack was only ended by a male passer-by who intervened, before Coleman fled in his car.

Coleman, a former head of the London Fire Authority, had denied charges of assault by beating and driving without reasonable care.

But before the start of the trial at Uxbridge Magistrate’s Court on Friday, the disgraced politician changed his plea to guilty on the charge of common assault, while the driving charge was dropped.

Coleman was made to pay £1,385, made up of £250 compensation to Miss Michael, prosecution costs of £850, a £270 fine and a £15 victim surcharge.

The senior Tory was suspended from the Conservative Party following his arrest, pending the outcome of the trial.

But since his guilty plea, neither the national party or the Barnet Conservative's have yet commented on what action will be taken against him.
