The last pint has been poured at a Golders Green pub that has served punters for more than 130 years.

The White Swan in Golders Green Road has been shut down after being sold to developers, leaving customers concerned for its long term future.

Beryl English, 65, grew up at the pub when her parents Biddy and Bunny Watts ran it.

Mrs English said: “I lived there for 25 years along with my two sisters so the pub is very important to all of us. We’re absolutely gutted it’s closing down.”

The pub first opened in 1882 and was in Mrs English’s family for 99 years.

In April 1986 The White Swan was locally listed which means Barnet Borough Council considers it to be of importance to the borough's heritage.

As a result the council must seek to ensure the pub’s special character is protected and enhanced if a planning application is submitted – although developers can knock the building down without permission from the authority.

Mrs English said: “It’s a shame nothing could have been done to protect the pub and keep it running for future generations to enjoy.

“It would have been nice if customers had been given the opportunity to hand in a objection against its closure.

“It’s an old, traditional building which has been in Golders Green for a very long time and now it’s going – it’s just tragic.”

The pub was sold by pub company Trust Inns which did not want to comment on the sale.
