Potters Bar adventurer to fly around the world
Around the World in 80 Days might have been a work of fiction – but one man will make it reality by being the first person to fly, drive and sail around the globe.
Mike Perham, of Potters Bar, has already driven and sailed around the world, but next year he will fly solo across the planet.
Nobody has ever flown, driven and sailed around the world before and Mr Perham hopes to be the first person to break a world record.
The 21-year-old will visit 25 countries during his expedition, including Europe, Asia and America.
He has recently qualified for his pilot’s licence and is now undertaking rigorous training to ensure he is fit enough for next year.
He said: “It’s daunting and even though I am really excited, part of me is also quite nervous. Either way, it’s going to be an amazing experience.
“I’m looking forward to it – it’s nice to have something to focus on. I guess I’ve always wanted to be a pilot and this is something different.
“I can’t wait to get in that plane and head off.”
When he was just 17-years-old, he sailed around the world and three years later, he drove around the globe in a bright orange spaceship to raise money for charity Shelterbox.
Former Chancellors School student, in Brookmans Park, will leave for his 23,000 mile challenge in early June 2014, and his jaunt is expected to take three months.
The young adventurer had always dreamed of becoming a pilot, but his interest waned when he took up sailing as a child.
He added: “I love being in a plane – you feel free up there. I love looking down on the world, it puts everything into perspective.
“I don’t think it will get as lonely as when I went sailing around the world because I’ll be stopping off everywhere.
“I can’t wait to get going.”
