Chipping Barnet's Conservative MP Theresa Villiers welcomes NHS board's hospital expansion decision
A leading Conservative MP has welcomed an expansion of accident and emergency and maternity services at Barnet Hospital.
Chipping Barnet representative Theresa Villiers says the planned expansion, due to be ratified by an NHS trust board later this month, is “important”.
Members of the Barnet and Chase Farm Hospital’s NHS Trust board of directors agreed to the changes on Friday and will draw up a timeline on September 25.
The A&E department at Chase Farm Hospital in Enfield will close under the plans.
Ms Villers, the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, said: "It is very important that plans to expand A&E and maternity services go ahead.
“With more and more people using A&E and the changes taking place at Chase Farm, this expansion at Barnet is needed to ensure that the hospital can continue to provide good services to patients.
“I have been monitoring the situation carefully and will keep up the pressure until the expansion is delivered."
"I recently visited Barnet A&E during the busy Saturday evening period to hear directly from clinicians and hospital managers on the work underway on this much needed expansion of our local hospital."
