Roar Betting applies to Barnet Council to become seventh gambling shop in Hendon Central area
A gambling firm has applied to open another betting shop in Hendon Central - despite complaints the businesses are feeding the decline of the area.
Roar Betting Ltd wants to open a branch in Central Circus which, if approved, will become the seventh gambling outlet near Hendon Central tube station.
Residents have sent five letters of objection to the proposals, complaining that the businesses, combined with outlets selling cheap alcohol, attract anti-social behaviour.
Councillors will decide on the application at a meeting on Thursday having last week approved later opening times for two Ladbrokes stores in the area.
If approved, the Roar branch will join Ladbrokes, Coral, BetFred and Paddy Power stores in Hendon Central.
In one letter of objection, Violet Cooney, who has lived in the area for 25 years, said: “It no longer feels safe to go out of one’s home, particularly late in the evening and certainly after dark.
“This threatening state of Hendon Central is largely due to anti social behaviour, crime and disorder in this area.
“I cannot perceive any possible justification for another (betting shop) within the same space and with easy and close access to three alcohol outlets.
“The increase in begging for money has increased significantly which I argue is in part due to the increase in gambling availability.”
