Edgware Estate Agent Melvin Jacob's charity cycle ride for Norwood
A father who has not ridden a bike since he was a teenager will saddle up for a charity cycle ride across Madagascar.
Melvin Jacobs, who owns an estate agents in Manor Park Crescent, Edgware, has set himself the target of raising £5,000 for Jewish charity Norwood.
The 47-year-old’s 300-mile ride will take him across the island, which lies off the coast of Mozambique in the Indian Ocean.
He said: “I bought a new bike six months ago and it’s true what they say - you never forget how to ride a bike. It’s been peculiar cycling again though, there are so crazy people on the roads.
“Madagascar will be an experience - the ride’s going to be very hard because there is a lot of cycling up hills and the roads aren’t great out there.
“It’s for a good cause and instead of just giving money, I wanted to actually do something with my time. Plus, I’m always up for a challenge.”
The father-of-two, who leaves his trip on October 10, says he is inspired by the work Norwood, based in The Broadway, Stanmore, does with people with disabilities.
He will be joined by 41 other people and has been rigorously training, cycling through Hyde Park, Chelsea and Fulham.
Mr Jacobs has already passed his original target of £5,000 and is £500 short of reaching his new target of £6,000.
He added: “It’s been knackering and even if I have to walk some of the way, I won’t give up. I will finish it - even if I have to walk with my bike some of the way.”
