Squatters at The Bohemia pub in North Finchley use social networks Twitter and Facebook to publicise occupation
Squatters occupying The Bohemia pub in North Finchley have taken to social media to publicise their takeover of the building.
The group, which spent five months occupying Friern Barnet Library to bring it back into community use, has established a Twitter profile and a Facebook page for the project.
At least seven people gained access to the pub on Thursday night, four weeks after it was closed by owners Mitchells and Butlers.
Group leader Pete Phoenix told the Times Series on Friday that some of his clan needed somewhere to live and that they wanted to open the building as a community centre.
But campaigners fighting to have the pub reopened said it they had held positive talks with the property’s agent Colliers and were confident the venue would remain as a pub.
Since claiming squatters’ rights at the pub last week, the occupiers have taken to Twitter to spread news of their upcoming open events, including live music and a movie night.
The profile @OurBohemia has gained 33 followers since it sprung up over the weekend and proclaims itself as “a new community space in North Finchley. Formerly The Bohemia pub, and presently everyone’s Bohemia.”
Meanwhile, a Facebook group publicising the occupation has gained 28 ‘likes’.
Mitchells and Butlers said in a statement: “The Bohemia is in the hands of the administrators and therefore they are responsible for the security of the property. They have been made aware squatters have gained access to the building.”
