Barnet Council launches Sports and Physical Activity Review
Barnet Borough Council is now encouraging more people to take up a new sport to help keep fit and stay active.
The authority has launched a new sports and physical activity review to help create a blueprint of how sports and leisure is provided.
This comes after the borough was ranked 23rd out of 33 London boroughs for the level of physical activity, according to the Sport England Active People Survey.
Just 11 per cent of residents never walk more than five minutes for any reason, and one in three children aged ten to 11 is overweight or obese.
The SPA review aims to find out how people keep themselves fit and active, whether it’s by going to the local leisure centre, gym, sports club, or by jogging, cycling or walking the dog.
It also aims to find out what prevents people from doing sport or physical activity, and how they might be encouraged to get active.
Councillor Helena Hart, Cabinet Member for Public Health, said: “Now the council has responsibility for public health it’s extremely important that we ensure we have the right sort and variety of facilities to help and encourage our residents to become fit and healthy - and to stay that way."
