Work begins on first council homes to be built since 1991
Construction has started on the first new council homes to be built in Barnet since 1991.
Barnet Homes and contractor Mears hope to finish building the new homes in Alexandra Road, Muswell Hill, by February 2014.
Tracey Lees, chief executive at Barnet Homes, said: “These homes will provide much needed accommodation to three families and will be the start of a larger programme of construction of additional homes in Barnet.”
Once completed, the properties will be let out on five-year tenancies. Barnet Homes has said it is intended the tenants will move to a smaller property when their family has left home, releasing the house for another family.
Speaking about the construction work Jane Nelson, executive director at Mears Group, said: "We are using modern methods of construction to minimise inconvenience to local residents and to fast-track the build so the new tenants can move into their new homes as soon as possible.
“We have also committed to maintaining the properties for the next 10 years so tenants can have confidence in the long-term quality of their homes.”
These homes form the start of a larger programme of new-builds which will see further homes being constructed over the next two years.
