A group of Middlesex University students have been named as the most talented in their field in a national skills competition.

Three teams from the university's Hendon campus were awarded medals in the finals of the WorldSkills UK National Competitions at The Skills Show.

Calum Knott and John Peerless were awarded gold in the mechatronics category while Denis Tsvetkov and Eduardo Adend picked up bronze.

The Middlesex mobile robotics team, Mohammed Yusuf and Luke Bennett, also scooped silver in their category.

Gold medallist Calum, who is a design engineering student from Cockfosters, said: “We had trained hard but faced tough competition so it felt well-deserved to have won a gold medal.  We’re now trained to industry standard which will help us in our careers in the future.”

Contestants were tested in 70 fields from floristry to engineering before the winners were crowned on Saturday at the NEC Birmingham.

Skills and Enterprise Minister Matthew Hancock congratulated the victorious teams.

He said: “Skills are vital to the future of our country and it’s great to see so many talented young people taking part and demonstrating their expertise.

"I hope the winners will inspire others to begin learning a new skill which could lead to a new career and then to become the stars of tomorrow.”

Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg spoke at the show, the UK's largest skills and careers event. See what he said below.
