The Mayor of London Boris Johnson and EastEnders actress Barbara Windsor awarded a Barnet volunteer for helping make the capital “a better place to live and work”.

Tyrese Nana Adu Gyamfi scooped the under 25 prize in the My Community category for his role in the Stonegrove Estates Youth Project.

Tyrese is a youth representative attending ward panels, community groups and safer neighbourhood team meetings.

He also helped secure funding for an estate football team which won two football tournaments within two months, as well as money for new DJ equipment to teach music to younger children in the estate.

Tyrese said: “I love helping young people and I get a real kick out seeing them do good things in the community.”

Reverend Simon Rea from St Peter's Church, who is chair of the project’s management committee, said: “It’s great to see this recognition for the work Tyrese and the other volunteers do to make this a better place to live.

“It shows how young and can work together to build community spirit – especially when there is so much negative publicity about young people and finances are so scarce.”

The annual Team London Awards ceremony celebrated the achievements of 15 individuals and groups who have dedicated time and energy to helping others.

The awards were presented by the Mayor alongside Barbara Windsor, Ledley King, Bear Grylls and Paralympian athlete Martine Wright, who has been appointed as Team London Champion.

Boris Johnson said: ‘Team London volunteers represent the cream of our capital, giving their precious time and tireless effort to make a real difference to our lives whilst helping to make London the fantastic city it is.

“I have been delighted to meet our latest crop of award winners and want to thank them and all of London’s volunteers for the incredible work they do.”
