A teenager is making a film to educate other young people on the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse.

Farin Somani, 14, from Edgware, represents Barnet’s young people in the UK Youth Parliament and believes that schools do not do enough to inform teenagers.

She said: “A survey in September showed that nearly a third of young people in Barnet have taken 'legal highs'. Drug use is currently on a steady rise and more and more young people are becoming exposed to newer drugs such as Mephedrone, legal highs and many more.

“I’m not anyone’s parent so I can’t say 'don’t do this, don’t do that', but I can tell people what they’re getting themselves into.”

The film will be released in April next year, and features true stories of young people in Barnet who have suffered from drug and alcohol abuse.

It will be shot from these young people’s point of view but will feature contributions from Barnet’s police, social workers and drug charities.

Farin is leading the project herself, supported by Barnet’s Young People Drugs and Alcohol Support.
