A birthday card drawn by the late Amy Winehouse has raised £200 in an online auction for the MS Society.

The copy of the card was given to the charity by the singer’s mum Janis Winehouse, of East Barnet, who has multiple sclerosis (MS).

Amy, famous for hits including Rehab and Back to Black, made the card when she was just 12 years old, drawing a picture of her mum while sitting in a French lesson.

It was auctioned to the highest bidder on eBay to raise money for the MS Society as part of its Cards for a Cause campaign.

Other famous names who supported the campaign included David Tennant, Sir Roger Moore, Jamie Oliver, Olympic sailing gold medallist Sir Ben Ainslie, explorer Sir Ranulph Fiennes, Downton Abbey actor Hugh Bonneville, Alan Shearer, world and Olympic cycling champion Sir Chris Hoy and Oritsé Williams from JLS.

In total, the auction raised £2,900 for the charity, which will be spent on its research programme.

Michelle Mitchell, chief executive of the MS Society, said: “We’re focused on finding a cure and are also funding studies to slow or halt the progression of the condition as well as improving the quality of life of people affected by MS.

“We’d like to say a huge thank you to all the celebrities who gave up their time to design a card for us.”

Multiple sclerosis affects the central nervous system, interfering in messages sent from the brain and spine.
