Scouts showed the Lord Lieutenant of Hertfordshire how to set up camp and cook on an open fire in Potters Bar on Saturday.

The Countess of Verulam, Lady Dione Verulam, visited Potters Bar Scouts at Tolmers Scout Camp in Tolmers Road where they joined 1,000 other happy campers for the Fire and Ice Camp.

The annual event celebrates a new year of adventure for Scouts across the UK, and offers a range of activities from abseiling to archery and climbing.

Potters Bar Scouts Gus Northfield, William Astley, David Fraser and Katie Whitear told Lady Verulam about the type of activities they have enjoyed such as hiking at night, and making lots of new friends.

Volunteer Ian Lewington said “Scouting is part of my life and I have made many lifelong friends. It gives you an enormous amount of pleasure to see young people enjoying themselves, trying new activities and achieving numerous goals.”
