A collective bargaining scheme that could save people money on their energy bills is being run by Barnet Council for the second year running.

The authority is one of 23 across the capital supporting the Big London Energy Switch, which signs up large numbers of potential customers to encourage energy companies to offer the best possible prices.

Last year, 417 households signed up to the scheme, with about 70 per cent able to save an average of £200 on their electricity, gas or dual fuel bill.

The closing date for registration is Monday 17 February. After the closing date, the energy supplier with the best deal will be chosen during an auction on 18 February 2014.

There is no obligation for residents to accept the offer if it isn’t right for them.

Council leader Richard Cornelius said: “The council will also be looking at how we can develop similar initiatives over the coming year to help residents with the rising costs of living.”
